The mission

Many exports from Madagascar currently rely on mainline services involving transhipment, creating exposure to delays and schedule variability. Windcoop will provide a direct 30-day service between Madagascar and France without transhipment. Because wind supplies a substantial share of propulsion, the service is designed to reduce exposure to bunker-price volatility and to achieve a carbon footprint more than 50% below the defined reference service. For producers of vanilla, coffee, cocoa, spices and essential oils, Windcoop will provide a dedicated and predictable route to European markets.

Performance and impact

Calibrated against operational data from Canopée, the project simulations indicate a 60% reduction in CO₂ emissions against the defined reference service. Wind propulsion improves long-term freight-rate stability because the wind-provided share of propulsion is not exposed to bunker prices. Windcoop’s cooperative model reinforces this resilience by bringing together shippers, citizen members, employees and financial partners with voting rights.

How Z&B delivers this project

Windcoop was co-founded by Zéphyr & Borée, renewable-energy cooperative Enercoop and Arcadie, the project’s founding shipper member. Zéphyr & Borée led the technical design of Miaraka, co-developed the shipping service, oversees construction at the shipyard and will provide ship management of the vessel after delivery.
